Get your walking shoes on for fun and fitness

Media Release -28 August 2020

The Heart Foundation is urging more people in regional South Australia to sign on and step out with a Heart Foundation Walking group.

“Walking groups are a simple and enjoyable way to get your recommended 30 minutes of physical activity each day,” said Heart Foundation CEO South Australia/Northern Territory, Imelda Lynch.
“They are also a great way to socialise and meet new people. Our walkers often tell us they start for the exercise but stay for the company.”

Ms Lynch said a recent Heart Foundation survey of 300 Australians found about 30 per cent said they had been walking more after COVID-19 restrictions came into effect.

“Let’s keep the momentum going now that restrictions have been eased. Regular physical activity, such as a brisk walk can deliver real health benefits. It not only reduces your risk of heart disease and other chronic conditions, but you are likely to feel more energetic, enjoy better mental health and keep your weight, blood pressure and other risk factors in check.”

Research shows that South Australians are not doing enough physical activity to maintain good health.

“All adults should aim for 150 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as walking, each week. That’s 30 minutes a day, five days a week,” Ms Lynch said.

“Only 30 per cent of men and 21 per cent of women in South Australia are meeting the Government’s physical activity guidelines.

“We know people in rural and remote communities are less likely to be physically active than their city counterparts, so we are currently focusing on these areas with support from Wellbeing SA.

“We are encouraging people in regional communities to walk more - and joining a Heart Foundation Walking group is an easy, free and enjoyable way to do that.”

To locate a group in your area, visit walking.heartfoundation.org.au  click the “Find a Group Near You” button, and enter your post code. This will show you all nearby groups, along with information such as when and where a group meets. Or you can register as a Walk organiser and start a new group in your local area.

Heart Foundation Walking is Australia’s largest walking community, with more than 1200 groups and over 30,000 walkers across the country, including many that are pram-friendly and dog-friendly.
