WEBINAR | Absolute CVD risk assessment practical update

A multidisciplinary panel of experts discuss the practical application of absolute CVD risk assessment through Heart Health Checks.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk reduction is essential to reduce the increasing burden of CVD morbidity and mortality and growing healthcare expenditure. In Australia, CVD is largely preventable, with modifiable CVD risk factors accounting for up to 90% of the risk of myocardial infarction (i.e. heart attack).

The identified barriers to the uptake of CVD risk assessment in primary care can include:

  • Lack of time
  • Restrictions in prescribing under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Schedule
  • Lack of patient awareness
  • Outdated guidance and evidence on the absolute risk approach.

Changes to national policy over the last decade have addressed some of these barriers and offer Australian healthcare professionals a fresh approach to absolute CVD risk assessments.

In this webinar, expert panelists discuss:

  • What Heart Health Checks (as a new MBS item on absolute CVD risk) mean for primary prevention of CVD and how they can be rolled out in practice
  • The practical implementation of absolute CVD risk assessment in primary care, including key enablers and barriers
  • The role of patient engagement in communicating CVD risk and how this can translate into effective behavioural change.
