5 heart-healthy breakfasts-in-bed to make Dad on Father's Day

Father’s Day is a chance to acknowledge and celebrate the fathers and father-figures whom we love and let them know they hold a special place in our hearts. A great way to share your love this Father’s Day is making sure heart health is on the menu! Whether you’re gathering around a table or letting Dad have a much-needed sleep in and a breakfast-in-bed, be sure to make him something healthy and delicious!

Nutritious meals for heart health

Fresh and varied meals play a big part in keeping your heart healthy. The foods you eat impact your blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and diabetes risk. Poor diet is a leading risk factor for heart disease so when you’re cooking, whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner, it’s important to ensure that each meal contains foods that will support heart health.

To start your dad off on a heart-healthy journey this Father’s Day, why not try one of these 5 delicious breakfast recipes:

1. Breakfast tacos

Get messy and have fun with these breakfast tacos! Easy to make and assemble, they are full of delicious veggies and wholegrains.

Filling your plate with vegetables, fruit and wholegrains is important for heart health! Most Aussies don’t eat nearly enough vegetables. This means they are missing out on essential vitamins and minerals, as well as fibre and antioxidants. This super healthy take on your traditional tacos incorporates fresh vegetables and wholegrains. What better way to start his Father’s Day? If Dad prefers, you can always swap the white corn tortillas with mini flour tortillas, or if he likes a bit of heat, replace the smoked paprika with chilli powder instead.

2. Brunch tarts

These brunch tarts are full of protein and tasty to boot. They are best enjoyed after a good sleep in, so why not bring them to Dad for breakfast in bed?

Did you know that protein is essential to building and repairing muscles in the body? It’s important to have a variety of protein foods in your diet, including from plant sources, fish/seafood, and some animal sources. The eggs in this recipe are full of protein, and combined with the other ingredients like wholemeal bread, healthy fats and vegetables will keep Dad feeling full for ages!

3. Wholemeal pancakes with winter fruits

Nothing says ‘I love you’ like pancakes, so bring Dad a plate of our wholemeal pancakes, piled high with winter fruits. They pair well with a cup of coffee and a warm hug!

These pancakes contain reduced fat milk and yoghurt, both of which are better dairy options for people with heart disease or high cholesterol. They’re also a great way to incorporate more fruit into your day. If stewed fruit is not Dad’s thing, simply substitute this with a selection of fresh fruit such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or even additional banana.

4. Smashed avocado with eggs on multigrain

Bring the café dining experience to Dad with this delicious smashed avo with eggs on multigrain recipe. It’s full of healthy fats that protect the heart! Healthy fats like the avocado in this recipe are an important part of a Heart-Healthy Eating Pattern. They can help improve cholesterol levels by decreasing the bad (LDL) cholesterol and increasing the good (HDL) cholesterol, which can lower your risk of heart disease. Other foods that are full of heart healthy fats include olives, nuts, seeds, and their oils.

5. Sweet potato breakfast hash

This sweet potato breakfast hash is versatile, filling, and above all, tasty. We promise it’s sure to tick all the right boxes for Dad this Father’s Day!

Don’t skimp on flavour at breakfast time. This breakfast hash contains a variety of vegetables and legumes, all of which contribute to a heart-healthy eating pattern. Chickpeas, which are legumes (also known as pulses) are one of the best sources of protein for heart health. Legumes contain soluble fibre, micro-nutrients, healthy fats and have a low glycaemic index (GI). They are linked to lower cholesterol levels, which can help lower your risk of heart disease.
