What we do

We are leading the fight to save Australian hearts

The Heart Foundation supports over 580,000 Australians living with heart disease today, as well as working tirelessly to prevent and manage heart disease for future generations.

The Heart Foundation’s work is purpose-driven, with a focus on stopping Australia’s number one killer: heart disease, which takes 48 lives every day.  

We act to make a difference in the fight against heart disease by:
  • Funding high-impact research, supporting emerging and leading heart health researchers 
  • Working to improve heart disease prevention, detection, care and support for all Australians 
  • Advocating to governments and industry for increased funding and resources for heart health 
  • Building community awareness about living a heart-healthy lifestyle. We do this through public health awareness campaigns, accessible information and resources 
  • Supporting health professionals in their work to prevent, diagnose, treat and manage heart disease.

Our mission 

The Heart Foundation is committed to preventing heart disease and improving the heart health and quality of life of all Australians. We do this through our work in prevention, support and research. 

We take on the fight to end heart disease by funding world-leading research, supporting health professionals to prevent and treat these conditions. We also advocate for governments to change policy and increase funding for heart health. We’ve been doing this since 1959.  

Our key achievements 

$600+ million invested in research 

Since 1962, the Heart Foundation has invested over half a billion dollars to support Australian researchers. This funding helps to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. 

Health star rating 

In 2013, the government introduced the Health Star Ratings system after a campaign by the Heart Foundation and other health organisations. It provides an easy-to-understand tool to help people make healthier food choices. 

10 million kids get skipping 

Since its launch in 1983, over 10 million kids have participated in Jump Rope for Heart. This initiative helps to keep school children active and promote the importance of physical activity.  

Championing anti-smoking 

Over the past 60 years, the Heart Foundation has championed a number of key anti-smoking campaigns. These have helped to educate Australians on the dangers of smoking. We’ve also lobbied government to: 
  • Introduce health warnings on cigarette packs, as well as the world-first creation of plain packaging for tobacco 
  • Ban tobacco advertising on radio and television 
  • Outlaw smoking in restaurants and cafes, as well as workplaces, indoor public spaces, and many other areas.
